About the Candidate
Meet Gary G. Smith
Gary G. Smith is a multi-generational Nebraskan, retired Police Chief, and former university lecturer and assistant professor with 33 years of public service who holds a Masters of Science Degree. An FBI National Academy graduate and small business owner, Gary has spent his career demanding accountability, transparency, and results. He and his wife Ruth have been married for over 43 years and are proud to call Kearney home.
Gary is running because Central Community College’s students and taxpayers deserve a board member who asks the right questions and insists on honest answers. CCC’s budget is growing while enrollment is shrinking — and it’s time for real oversight.
Gary attended classes at the Hastings and Grand Island CCC campuses and taught Criminal Justice at Central Community College in Grand Island in the late 1990s. He understands this institution from the inside — as a student, an instructor, and now as a candidate committed to its future.

Fiscal Responsibility
CCC’s budget is growing faster than inflation while enrollment is shrinking. Gary will contain spending, demand needs-based budgeting, and ensure every taxpayer dollar is spent wisely.
Train Workers, Fill Local Jobs
Gary will expand vocational programs and partner with local employers so CCC graduates are job-ready on day one — keeping Nebraska talent in Nebraska.
Merit & Accountability
Gary will ensure hiring and promotion are based on merit, eliminate grade inflation, and hold faculty accountable for delivering rigorous, relevant curriculum.
Full Transparency
The board should answer to students, parents, and taxpayers — not special interests. Gary will push for open meetings, accessible leadership, and real community input.
Proudly Conservative
Gary is a fiscal conservative who believes government must live within its means. He will apply the same discipline to CCC’s budget that he applied throughout his 33-year career.
